The idea is to make a database of portraits in private collections. It would add to and complement the work of the Public Catalogue Foundation. The owners would remain secret but it would mean that they could discover family members and negotiate to buy from one another, or if the knowledge has been lost over time, they might simply discover the identity of the sitter in their portrait and the artist.
